Spain’s average net income per person reached 15,948 euros in 2024, up 6.1% from 2023, according to National Statistics Institute data published on Monday.
The INE figures, reported by Sur in English on Oct. 20, show the regional split remains wide: Pozuelo de Alarcón averaged 32,612 euros per person, compared with 9,153 euros in Iznalloz.
Madrid and Barcelona provinces accounted for 14 of Spain’s 15 municipalities with the highest average annual net income, the INE data showed. Getxo, in Vizcaya, was the only municipality outside those two provinces in the top 15.
Pozuelo de Alarcón, near Madrid, stayed first, matching its 2023 position. Matadepera in Barcelona ranked second with 28,607 euros, followed by Boadilla del Monte in Madrid with 28,382 euros, the same top-three order as a year earlier.
At the other end of the distribution, 12 of the 15 lowest-income municipalities were in Andalucía. Iznalloz, in Granada, again had Spain’s lowest average annual income per inhabitant at 9,153 euros, followed by El Palmar de Troya in Seville and Albuñol in Granada.
The gap between the wealthiest and poorest municipalities was broadly stable from 2023, according to the reported INE data. Pozuelo’s average income was still more than three times Iznalloz’s, underlining how national gains in income have not erased territorial differences.
The regional pattern was also visible by quartile. Almost 90% of municipalities in the Basque Country were in Spain’s highest-income 25%, above 17,157 euros, while more than 70% of municipalities in Navarre also fell in that bracket. In Murcia, 91.1% of municipalities were in the lowest-income 25%, below 13,407 euros; in Andalucía, the share was 84%.
By province, Guipúzkoa had the highest average net annual income per inhabitant in 2024 at 20,790 euros. Vizcaya followed with 19,858 euros, and Madrid ranked third with 19,277 euros. The lowest provincial figures were in Almeria at 12,244 euros, Huelva at 12,765 euros and Jaén at 12,835 euros.
Household income rose alongside individual income. Average net household income increased 5.9% in 2024 and exceeded 40,000 euros, while gross income before tax rose 6.8% per person to 19,716 euros and 6.7% per household to 50,201 euros.
The distribution remained skewed toward higher earners. Average income per consumption unit, an adjusted measure that accounts for household size, was 23,643 euros in 2024, compared with a median of 19,950 euros. The average rose 5.9%, while the median increased 3.6%.
Wages made up 60% of total income, pensions accounted for 20%, and other income represented 13.7%, according to the reported INE breakdown. Unemployment benefits contributed 1.9%, while other social benefits made up 4.5%.
The Gini coefficient, a measure of income inequality where higher readings show wider dispersion, was higher in large urban areas. Pozuelo de Alarcón recorded 44.2 points, compared with 26.5 points in Iznalloz, according to the INE figures cited by Sur in English.
