Netanyahu Directs IDF to Expand Gaza Control

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to increase its control over the Gaza Strip to 70%. This directive follows the IDF's current control of 60% of the territory, an increase from 53% agreed upon in the October 2025 ceasefire brokered by Donald Trump.

The expansion of Israeli control contradicts the terms of the existing ceasefire agreement, which stipulated an IDF withdrawal to a demarcation line known as the "yellow line." The ceasefire also outlined subsequent steps for Hamas disarmament and full Israeli troop withdrawal, but indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the U.S., have stalled.

Since the October 2025 ceasefire, 738 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations. Recent Israeli strikes in Gaza have targeted Hamas leaders, including the killing of Hamas battalion commander Imad Asleem and the newly chosen head of the Hamas military wing, Mohammed Odeh, along with family members.

These actions occur amidst ongoing statements from Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, affirming Israel's commitment to eliminating Hamas and preventing its governance in Gaza.
