Mizoram seeks tourism investment with Rs681 crore projects

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma said Wednesday that the state and India’s central government are undertaking tourism infrastructure projects worth Rs 681.16 crore, or Rs 6.81 billion, according to a Prokerala news report.

At the Wednesday conclave, Lalduhoma said about 600,000 tourists visited Mizoram up to September this year, while existing accommodation facilities were struggling to meet demand.

Speaking at the Mizoram Tourism Conclave 2026 in Aizawl, Lalduhoma said a further Rs 11.10 crore of projects were in the pipeline under Bana Kaih, the state’s flagship handholding scheme.

The chief minister credited financial support from the Union Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region and NITI Aayog for helping develop tourism infrastructure in the northeastern Indian state.

Lalduhoma said the extension of railway services to Sairang, near Aizawl, had improved access and contributed to higher tourist arrivals. He said the visitor count was expected to rise further, according to the report.

The state is also trying to expand rural and community-based tourism. Lalduhoma said work had recently begun on 199 new homestays supported by the Bana Kaih scheme, corporate social responsibility initiatives and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan.

The conclave’s theme is “Investing in Mizoram CAN (Culture, Adventure and Nature) for Sustainable Development.” Lalduhoma identified culture, adventure and nature as areas that could attract visitors and investment, citing events such as paragliding competitions, half-marathons and cycling events.

Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar also addressed the gathering and said investors had opportunities to develop tourism-related infrastructure and services as the state seeks to accommodate more visitors.
