Michael Irvin says only Dolphins could have lured him from Dallas

Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin said in an interview with Hard Rock Bet published in October 2026 that the Miami Dolphins were the only NFL franchise he would have considered joining during his 12-season career. Irvin, who won three Super Bowl titles with Dallas, said his primary motivation for such a move would have been to help quarterback Dan Marino secure a championship.

"I would have delivered him his ring. I did deliver everybody else a ring," Irvin said. The receiver, who recorded 750 catches for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns during his tenure with the Cowboys, cited his deep ties to South Florida as the foundation for his interest. Irvin played at the University of Miami, where he won a national championship in 1987 before the Cowboys selected him 11th overall in the 1988 NFL Draft.

No formal trade or contract discussions ever occurred between the two franchises. Marino, who reached the Super Bowl once following the 1984 season, finished his career without a championship despite his status as one of the most prolific passers in league history. Irvin remained with the Cowboys until his retirement after the 1999 season.
