Cristiano Ronaldo says he remains available for Portugal selection despite leaving the squad after a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.
In a statement shared through his social accounts on October 6, the Al Nassr forward stopped short of international retirement. He made his availability conditional on his fitness, continued club performances and completion of any suspension imposed on him.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp after remaining on the bench throughout their September 27 victory in Norway. Portugal won the UEFA Nations League match 2-1, but the disagreement between their coach and record scorer continued beyond the result.
Ronaldo disputes the Norway agreement
Ronaldo’s explanation centers on what he says Jesus had agreed with him before the match. According to the striker, an earlier discussion had established that he would not feature against Norway while following a recovery program.
He said Jesus subsequently asked whether he could manage a 30-minute appearance, a request Ronaldo described as inconsistent with that arrangement. In his account, the preparation schedule had instead been built around playing at the Dragão on October 4.
The distinction is central to Ronaldo’s version of events: he said he had accepted sitting out the Norway fixture. His complaint was that Jesus changed the understanding and then failed to introduce him after raising the possibility of an appearance.
Ronaldo also criticized the coach’s manner when discussing the matter with reporters afterward. These are the player’s allegations about Jesus’s conduct; the available account does not establish the coach’s explanation of the conversations or whether he understood the agreement differently.
Portugal return carries conditions
At 41, Ronaldo has accumulated 146 international goals across 234 appearances for Portugal. That record gives the selection dispute a different scale from a routine disagreement over minutes, although his statement makes clear that another appearance still depends on a call-up.
His reference to a possible suspension adds a separate condition to any return. It should not be read as confirmation that a disciplinary penalty has already been imposed or that its duration has been decided.
For Ronaldo, the stated route back runs through his work at Al Nassr: remaining fit, continuing to play and scoring. He presented those conditions as grounds for future availability, rather than announcing an agreed return to Portugal’s squad.
Jesus relationship remains unresolved
The dispute involves a coach Ronaldo already knew from club football. Jesus worked with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player in Saudi Arabia during 2025–2026, before the disagreement described in the statement.
That shared history has not produced a settled account of the Norway episode. Ronaldo’s public willingness to represent Portugal again addresses his own intentions, but does not demonstrate that the disagreement with Jesus has been resolved.
If Portugal select him again, his fitness and any disciplinary restrictions would determine whether the availability he has offered can become a return. Until then, his position is narrower: the departure from camp was not, in his telling, an end to his international career.
