Mexican influencer Cesar Gastelum killed on livestream

Mexican social media influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot and killed on Tuesday while he was livestreaming in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, Mexican authorities said. Officials said the attack happened in a parking lot close to the regional prosecutor’s office, an area that typically has a visible security presence.

Investigators said video they reviewed shows two assailants arriving on a motorcycle, opening fire on Gastelum, and then leaving the scene. Authorities said they have not immediately identified suspects and have not disclosed a motive.

Officials said the shooting took place near the local prosecutor’s office, placing the killing in a zone associated with law enforcement activity. Authorities described the case as under active investigation, with federal and local institutions involved as inquiries continue.

Investigators said they are examining Gastelum’s online activity as part of the case. According to officials, his content included references to cartel subcultures, and they are assessing whether any public associations reflected online could have played a role in the homicide.

Online presence and content under review

Gastelum had about 650,000 followers on TikTok, according to the report. Mexico’s security cabinet and local prosecutors said he appeared to have posted videos that “alluded to a faction of a criminal group,” and that those materials are being reviewed as part of the investigative file.

Political response and broader security concerns

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the killing on Wednesday and called for swift investigative progress. “We must find out why this deplorable homicide occurred,” Sheinbaum told journalists, adding that “perpetrators must be arrested,” according to officials.

The killing has renewed attention on security conditions in Sinaloa, where officials have pointed to violence linked to rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel fighting for territorial control in recent years. Authorities have not said whether this case is connected to that conflict.

Second livestreamed killing since May 2025

Officials described Gastelum’s death as the second high-profile killing of a Mexican influencer during a livestream since May 2025. In that earlier case, 23-year-old beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was murdered in the central state of Jalisco, according to the report.

US rewards announcement adds external attention

The security environment has also drawn increased attention from the United States. The US administration announced on Wednesday that it is offering rewards totaling up to $102 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of eight leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the repoSources said.
