Meta Updates Terms to Permit Automated Data Scraping of Business Web Content
Meta’s updated terms of service allow the company to scrape data from business websites, raising concerns over data control and the regulatory implications…

Meta has updated its terms of service to grant the company broad authority to access, index, cache, analyze, and crawl web pages linked to business accounts on its platforms. These changes, effective October 30, apply to all commercial entities utilizing Meta Business Suite, advertising tools, or product sales features.
The policy shift allows the platform to extract data from external websites connected to business profiles. This expansion of data collection capabilities has prompted concerns regarding the autonomy of small businesses and their ability to protect proprietary digital content.
Meta maintains that businesses retain the ability to restrict automated scraping through technical website configurations. However, critics argue that the mandatory nature of these terms leaves commercial users with limited recourse, leading to formal inquiries regarding the regulatory implications of this data access. The update highlights ongoing tensions between platform governance and the digital sovereignty of third-party commercial entities.
