Mandelson Documents Reveal Appointment Risks

The UK Cabinet Office's due diligence report, released recently after Conservative pressure, highlighted significant risks regarding Peter Mandelson's appointment as US ambassador. The documents indicated Prime Minister Keir Starmer was aware of Mandelson's "particularly close relationship" with Jeffrey Epstein, which continued after Epstein's conviction, and potential conflicts of interest from Mandelson's lobbying firm, Global Counsel.

Concerns were also raised by Jonathan Powell, Starmer's national security adviser, and Philip Barton, then permanent secretary at the Foreign Office, about Mandelson's reputation and the rushed appointment process. Despite these warnings, the appointment proceeded. Mandelson was subsequently offered a £75,000 severance payment after his dismissal, having initially requested over £500,000.

The release of these documents has prompted Starmer to request a review of national security vetting procedures. The Metropolitan Police are currently withholding key documents related to their criminal investigation into Mandelson, which will keep further details contested until their release.
