Clyburn Seeks Reelection Amid Party Shifts

Representative Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) announced on Thursday his intention to seek reelection in November, defying calls for generational leadership change within the Democratic Party. Clyburn, 85, first elected in 1992, has served 17 terms in the House, including a period as majority whip. His decision comes as former Democratic House leaders Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer are set to retire next year.

Clyburn's 6th District is a heavily Democratic stronghold, positioning him as a strong favorite for victory. He has been a significant figure in Democratic policy achievements, including the Affordable Care Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. His endorsement of Joe Biden in January 2020 was instrumental in Biden's presidential campaign.

Separately, the House Ethics Committee has formed an investigative subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.), to probe allegations against Representative Tony Gonzales (R-Texas). Gonzales recently stated he would not seek reelection. In the Senate, Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) advocated for a vote to eliminate the legislative filibuster, ahead of next week's consideration of the partisan SAVE America Act, which is expected to face a 60-vote threshold for passage.
