Iraq Seeks World Cup Qualifier Delay

Iraq's men's national football team coach, Graham Arnold, has formally requested FIFA to postpone their intercontinental World Cup playoff final, scheduled for March 31 in Monterrey, Mexico. This plea, made on March 9, 2026, stems from significant logistical disruptions caused by the escalating conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

The conflict has led to the closure of Iraqi airspace until April 1, preventing the domestic-based squad from assembling. Additionally, foreign embassy closures have hindered players from securing necessary visas for travel to Mexico. Coach Arnold himself is currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates due to the regional instability. These issues have already forced the cancellation of a planned training camp in Houston, U.S.

Arnold proposed that FIFA allow the preliminary match between Suriname and Bolivia to proceed this month, but defer Iraq's final playoff until a week before the World Cup commences. This delay, he argues, would enable Iraq to field its strongest team, which is crucial for their first potential World Cup qualification since 1986. The World Cup is set to take place in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
