Iran Calls for Condemnation at BRICS Meeting

Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, on Thursday urged BRICS nations to condemn alleged violations of international law by the United States and Israel, including what he termed "illegal aggression against Iran." This appeal was made during a two-day BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India, on May 14, 2026.

Araqchi's statements highlighted existing divisions within the expanded BRICS bloc, particularly concerning the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran. The group, which operates by consensus, now includes regional rivals Iran and the United Arab Emirates, complicating efforts to achieve a unified stance on geopolitical issues. The conflict, which commenced on February 28, has escalated geopolitical tensions and contributed to a global energy crisis.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of stability and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. He also raised concerns about the increasing use of unilateral sanctions, which he stated disproportionately affect developing countries. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments, leading to increased crude prices and fears of renewed inflation and a potential global economic slowdown.
