Iran Targets U.S. Base After U.S. Strikes

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced Monday it targeted a U.S. air base, following U.S. military strikes on Iranian sites over the weekend. This exchange occurred amidst ongoing negotiations to resolve a three-month conflict. Air defenses in Kuwait, home to a significant U.S. military presence, reportedly intercepted missile and drone attacks on Monday, according to the state news agency Kuna.

The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) stated its strikes on Iran's Gulf coast were a response to "aggressive Iranian actions," including the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone operating in international waters. Centcom reported that U.S. fighter aircraft eliminated Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed threats to maritime traffic. This incident marks the latest in a series of retaliatory actions between the two nations since a ceasefire took effect in early April.

The broader conflict, initiated on February 28, has resulted in thousands of casualties, primarily in Iran and Lebanon. It has also contributed to global economic instability by increasing energy prices due to Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Diplomatic efforts continue, with the U.S. and Iran at odds over issues such as sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian oil revenues, alongside Israel's ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
