Iran Increases Executions Amid Secrecy

Iran Increases Executions Amid Secrecy Iranian authorities have conducted at least 24 executions since March, with six occurring over two days, according to the Norway-based monitoring group Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO). These actions have raised concerns among human rights organizations regarding the fate of hundreds of individuals reportedly facing the death penalty following anti-government protests in January and accusations of espionage.

The executions are frequently carried out in secrecy, with families osourcesen learning of the deaths posthumously and, in some instances, being denied access to the bodies of the deceased. An internet blackout, in place for over two months, has complicated communication with individuals inside Iran, making independent verification of these reports challenging. Families of those executed have reported experiencing harassment and pressure to remain silent.

The recent surge in executions includes individuals arrested during the 2022 “Women, Life, Freedom” movement and those accused of spying. Rights groups, including IHRNGO, have documented a pattern of alleged psychological and physical torture used to extract confessions from detainees. These organizations have called on international bodies to intervene, citing fears that many more individuals remain at risk of execution.
