Florida Bill Expands Governor's Removal Powers

Florida's legislature passed a bill on Tuesday, March 12, 2026, granting Governor Ron DeSantis expanded authority to suspend local elected officials for actions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The legislation, SB 1134, prohibits local governments from promoting or adopting activities referencing race, color, sex, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation, and extends this ban to entities receiving city contracts or grants.

Under the bill, any elected official deemed in violation could be suspended by executive order for "misfeasance in office," a power previously used by Governor DeSantis twice against state attorneys. The suspended official's only recourse would be an appeal to the Republican-controlled Florida Senate, which holds a 28-12 supermajority.

The bill's broad and vague language could impact local government support for LGBTQ+ activities, including Pride events and community health centers, by prohibiting official promotion or funding.

This legislative action follows previous measures, such as the state's drag ban, which has affected Pride events. For instance, Port St. Lucie canceled its Pridefest parade in 2023, and Tampa Pride canceled all 2026 events, citing the political climate and the discontinuation of DEI programs. If signed into law, SB 1134 would further restrict cities from co-sponsoring, funding, or officially promoting such events.
