Gaza Truce Hits Snag Over Disarmament Demands

Gaza Ceasefire Talks Stall Amid Disarmament Dispute Negotiations between Israel and Hamas regarding the Gaza ceasefire have reached an impasse, raising concerns about a potential resumption of hostilities. The deadlock stems primarily from Israel's insistence on Hamas's disarmament, a condition Hamas has rejected. This development follows a ceasefire agreement initiated on October 10, which both sides accuse the other of violating.

The current stalemate is driven by differing interpretations of the ceasefire terms. Israel maintains that Hamas's refusal to disarm breaches the October agreement and aligns with a broader 20-point peace plan endorsed by a UN Security Council resolution.

Conversely, Hamas asserts that Israel has violated the agreement by failing to meet humanitarian commitments and continuing military actions. Recent Israeli airstrikes, including one that killed the son of a Hamas negotiator, have further exacerbated tensions.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with over two million residents displaced and increasing fears of renewed conflict. While Israel reportedly considers expanding its military control within Gaza, Hamas has called on international guarantors to intervene and halt Israeli actions. The Board of Peace, an international body, has linked Gaza's reconstruction funding to a lasting peace and the disarmament of Palestinian armed groups, a condition Hamas has not formally accepted.
