Cricket Captains Urge Khan's Independent Medical Care

A group of twenty-one former international cricket captains has formally urged Pakistani authorities to provide independent medical attention for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated. Notable signatories, including Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar and England's Sir Alastair Cook, addressed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif this week, expressing significant concern over the health of the 73-year-old Khan and his restricted access to external medical assessments.

The captains, spearheaded by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, specifically requested that Khan undergo evaluation by a Supreme Court-mandated medical board. This proposed board would include his personal physicians. The intervention was prompted by reports of a severe decline in Khan's vision, with his legal representatives claiming his right eye's capacity has fallen to 15 percent.

Call for Compliance with Court Directives

The diplomatic appeal from the cricket community follows a prior Supreme Court directive that ordered Khan's transfer to a private medical facility for examination. However, prison authorities instead opted to use a state-appointed team at a government hospital. This team subsequently declared Khan medically fit before returning him to custody. The captains also pressed the government to ensure adherence to court orders regarding weekly family visits for Khan, free from administrative obstructions.

Khan has been in detention since August 2023, facing multiple corruption charges. He has consistently denied these allegations. The signatories underscored that upholding court-ordered medical processes represents a fundamental matter of humanitarian decency, distinct from the ongoing political and legal disputes surrounding his incarceration.

Background of Detention and Previous Appeals

Imran Khan, a former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team, served as Pakistan's Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. His imprisonment has triggered widespread protests from his supporters across the country, which have been met with government crackdowns. He is currently facing charges in over 100 cases, ranging from accusations of leaking state secrets to allegations of illegally selling state gifts. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), maintains that these charges are politically motivated.

This latest plea is not the first instance of international concern for Khan's well-being. Fourteen of the same former captains had previously backed an appeal in February, advocating for "humane treatment and proper medical care" for him. Describing themselves as "former colleagues and rivals who share a bond forged on the cricket field," the captains emphasized that this bond "transcends the borders and disputes that too often divide countries," highlighting the humanitarian aspect of their request.
