Google Engages in Regulatory Compliance Talks Following €890 Million DMA Fine

The European Commission is currently negotiating with Google regarding operational adjustments following a €890 million penalty issued in July under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The fine comprised two distinct charges: €460 million for preferential treatment of internal services in search results and €430 million for restricting app developers from directing users to external payment channels.

Google faces a 60-day compliance window to implement structural changes or risk daily penalty payments reaching 5% of its average daily global turnover. The company has initiated modifications to its search display algorithms and fee structures for the Google Play store to align with regulatory mandates.

Commission officials are currently evaluating these measures, including soliciting feedback from third-party market participants to ensure competitive neutrality. This enforcement action represents a significant escalation in the EU’s regulatory oversight of large-scale digital platforms. The outcome of these negotiations will establish a critical precedent for future DMA enforcement and may necessitate further adjustments to Google’s global business model to maintain access to the European market.
