Xi Raises Thucydides Trap with Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping referenced the “Thucydides Trap” during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday, May 14, 2026, signaling potential geopolitical friction between rising and established powers. The concept, derived from the ancient Greek historian Thucydides, posits that war often becomes inevitable when a rising power threatens to displace an established one, as exemplified by the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta.
