Ukraine Says It Hit Five Ships; Drone Blast Near Romania

Ukraine said its forces struck five cargo vessels in the Sea of Azov and in coastal waters off Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, while a Ukrainian naval drone exploded off Romania’s coast on Friday near the port of Constanta. Officials said the drone blast caused damage but no injuries, and Ukraine blamed Russian electronic interference for the incident.

Ukraine’s drone forces commander said the ships were involved in transporting “illegal cargo,” including what Ukraine describes as stolen Ukrainian grain, as well as military supplies and fuel. He said the vessels had their names painted over and their radars turned off, which he said helped them avoid detection.

The developments added to wider concerns about security in the Black Sea region and nearby sea lanes, including the potential for spillover risks close to NATO territory.

Azerbaijan reports fatalities after separate Sea of Azov attacks

Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said two cargo ships, the Natra and Zirkon, were attacked by drones overnight in the Taganrog Bay area of the Sea of Azov, resulting in five Azerbaijani fatalities. The ministry said the vessels do not belong to Azerbaijan and did not specify who carried out the attacks.

Russia blamed Ukraine for the strikes on the two ships. Kyiv had not issued an immediate response regarding the reported Azerbaijani deaths.

Putin speech and Zelensky’s talks proposal frame the timing

The maritime incidents came as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared to deliver a speech at an economic event in St. Petersburg. They also followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s renewed call for direct talks with Putin aimed at de-escalating the war.

Putin said he was willing to reach an agreement with Ukraine but questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy as Ukraine’s representative, pointing to the absence of presidential elections since May 2024. Elections have been suspended under martial law since Russia’s invasion.

Fighting has continued alongside diplomatic maneuvering, and the situation at sea remains sensitive as both sides press claims about attacks and responsibility.

Officials have not said whether additional maritime incidents are expected, but the proximity of some events to Romania’s coast is likely to draw continued scrutiny from regional governments.
