Trump Reverses Permanent Intelligence Chief Nomination for Pulte

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will not nominate mortgage regulator Bill Pulte to serve as the permanent Director of National Intelligence (DNI) once his temporary appointment concludes early next year. This decision follows significant backlash from Democratic lawmakers and some Republican senators regarding Pulte's lack of national security experience for the role overseeing the 18-agency U.S. intelligence community.

Pulte's interim appointment, effective June 30, is limited to 210 days and does not require Senate confirmation. However, a permanent nomination would necessitate Senate approval, which Republican leaders indicated would be challenging for Pulte to secure due to statutory requirements for extensive national security experience. Lawmakers also expressed concerns that Pulte, known for pursuing mortgage fraud investigations against perceived political adversaries, might misuse access to top-secret intelligence.

The controversy surrounding Pulte's appointment has jeopardized bipartisan support for reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a critical foreign communications monitoring authority set to expire on June 12. Senator Mark Warner, a senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned that Democratic votes for renewal would be difficult to obtain without Pulte's withdrawal from the DNI position.
