Murdaugh Granted New Murder Trial
The South Carolina Supreme Court on May 13 granted Alex Murdaugh a new trial for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. This decision, issued unanimously, cited prejudicial comments made to jurors by a court official as the basis for overturning the previous conviction.
State prosecutors have indicated their intent to pursue a retrial for Murdaugh on the murder charges, potentially within the current year. The legal process for scheduling and conducting this new trial will commence following the Supreme Court's ruling.
Despite the new murder trial, Murdaugh will remain incarcerated. He is currently serving a 27-year sentence for state financial crimes and faces a 40-year federal sentence for similar offenses, which was upheld on October 1, 2024. These sentences were structured to ensure his continued imprisonment irrespective of the outcome of his murder conviction appeals.
