Kremlin Barrage Precedes Competing Peace Plans

Russian Strikes Precede Rival Ceasefire Proposals Russian forces conducted missile and drone strikes across Ukraine on Tuesday, resulting in over 20 fatalities, ahead of separate, unilateral ceasefire proposals from both Moscow and Kyiv. These attacks occurred as both nations announced ceasefires in anticipation of Russia's Victory Day commemorations on May 9.

Specifically, 12 individuals were killed in Zaporizhzhia, five in Kramatorsk, and four in Dnipro due to Russian aerial assaults. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks into Russia, with two fatalities and 32 injuries reported in the Chuvash Republic. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky described the Russian actions as a "cynical terrorist strike."

Russia declared a ceasefire for May 8 and 9, while Ukraine announced an open-ended ceasefire commencing at midnight on May 6, stating it would act "symmetrically." These unilateral declarations, lacking mutual agreement on terms or monitoring, precede Russia's scaled-back Victory Day parade in Moscow, attributed by the Kremlin to a "terrorist threat" from Ukraine.
