Runners face criticism over Yoo Ji-won memorial runs

Runners in South Korea faced criticism after posting memorial workouts for Yoo Ji-won, who died Oct. 11 after collapsing about 500 metres from a Seoul half-marathon finish, the Straits Times news report said.

The debate shows how online grieving can collide with fitness-tracking culture, with cited examples ranging from a 10km tribute to a 25.01km activity log shared after Yoo’s death.

Yoo, a graduate student at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and a running influencer, collapsed during the 2026 Seoul Race half-marathon. She was taken to a hospital and later died, according to the report.

In the days that followed, runners posted distances and times on social media under labels including “memorial run” and “mourning run”. One person who said they had followed Yoo for a long time posted a 10km run in her memory.

Another runner wrote, “Yoo Ji-won, we’ll run the remaining 500m for you,” referring to the distance she had left in the race. The same runner shared a 25.01km activity record completed in 2hr 29min and said the post expressed condolences as both a runner and a parent.

The posts drew objections from commenters who questioned whether running was an appropriate tribute for someone who died during a race. “I understand running in someone’s memory, but posting the results online seems to diminish the meaning of the tribute,” one commenter wrote.

Other commenters defended the posts, saying grief is expressed in different ways. “They may simply have wanted to remember her while running,” one commenter wrote, according to the report.

No public cause of death was given in the report.
