Pyongyang's Uranium Enrichment Capacity Surges 75%

A recent analysis indicates North Korea's capacity for uranium enrichment may soon grow by 75% once a new facility reaches full operational status. This expansion signals leader Kim Jong Un's resolve to augment his nation's nuclear arsenal, notwithstanding international pressure.

The facility, located in Yongbyon, is projected to house over 9,000 centrifuges. These are estimated to produce approximately 160 kilograms of highly enriched uranium annually, according to Vertic, a London-based non-profit specializing in arms control verification.

Significant Nuclear Growth Projected

This potential new production volume significantly adds to North Korea's existing capabilities, which Vertic previously estimated at around 215 kilograms of highly enriched uranium per year. Expert Grant Christopher noted that Pyongyang likely possesses sufficient material for a substantial nuclear arsenal already.

He further commented that there is no indication that North Korea intends to halt its nuclear expansion activities. The nation's total highly enriched uranium stockpile is estimated at 2,100 kilograms, a tenth of the reserves held by established nuclear powers like the United Kingdom or France.

Upon completion, the Yongbyon site will represent North Korea's largest known uranium enrichment operation.
