US Ends Iran Offensive Operations

U.S. Declares End to Iran Offensive Operations U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Tuesday that the offensive phase of military operations against Iran, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," has concluded. This declaration follows a series of U.S.-Israeli air strikes initiated on February 28, which targeted Iranian assets. The statement comes amidst heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint, where recent incidents have raised concerns about the stability of a ceasefire established in early April.

The U.S. objective for the offensive was stated as achieving specific military goals, which Rubio indicated have been met. Despite the cessation of offensive operations, the Strait of Hormuz continues to experience disruptions. On Tuesday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an attack on a cargo vessel in the Strait, while the UAE claimed its air defenses engaged Iranian missiles and drones for a second consecutive day. Iran has denied these allegations.

The initial U.S.-Israeli offensive led to Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas transits. While a ceasefire in early April halted Iran's drone and missile strikes on Gulf countries, transit through the Strait has remained limited. U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Rubio, have expressed a preference for a negotiated settlement with Iran, despite ongoing challenges to maritime security in the region.
