Hamza Obeng has been appointed interim head coach of Asante Kotoko, with his tenure commencing immediately ahead of Thursday's Ghana Premier League match against Karela United. This leadership transition follows Eric Tinkler's resignation from the head coach position.
Interim Charge for Obeng at Kotoko
Obeng, who previously coached the club's youth team, the Young Porcupines, steps into the senior team role on a temporary basis. His appointment comes as Asante Kotoko seeks a permanent successor for Tinkler, who departed after Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC. Tinkler has since returned to South Africa to pursue a new opportunity.
Second Interim Stint for Obeng
This marks Obeng's second period leading the senior squad in an interim capacity. He previously held the interim coaching position at the close of the last season, providing him with prior first-team experience during a similar transition. His immediate responsibility involves guiding Kotoko in the upcoming fixture at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Early Season Challenges for the Porcupine Warriors
Asante Kotoko enters the match aiming to reverse its challenging start to the season, having secured only one victory in their initial four Ghana Premier League games. The team's performance includes two draws and one defeat, placing the club under pressure for improved stability and results. Thursday's game against Karela United presents an immediate test for Obeng as the club navigates this coaching change.
