Netflix is launching a 47-day theatrical run for “La Bola Negra” to challenge “The Odyssey” for the best picture Oscar.

Netflix bets on La Bola Negra to win first best picture Oscar

Netflix is positioning the Spanish-language film "La Bola Negra" as its primary contender for the Academy Award for best picture, marking a strategic shift in its awards season campaign. The film hits theaters on Friday, with the streaming company planning a 47-day exclusive theatrical window before its digital debut.

This release strategy aims to build momentum among critics and voters for a movie produced for under $17 million. The film, a romantic drama, stands in stark contrast to Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey," a high-budget epic that has grossed more than $1.7 billion and is currently viewed as the frontrunner for Oscar glory.

Industry analysts suggest the campaign represents Netflix's most serious attempt to secure the top prize. Kyle Buchanan, a former awards columnist, noted that while previous Netflix entries like "Roma" were critically acclaimed, "La Bola Negra" is perceived as a "heart movie" that may resonate more effectively with the Academy’s voting base.

Despite the disparity in production budgets and star power, the film has garnered significant industry attention following successful festival screenings. Clayton Davis, chief awards editor at Variety, has predicted a nomination, while former Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson identified the project as a key contender in the current awards race.
