Meta Platforms is committing billions of dollars over several years to deploy tens of millions of Amazon Web Services’ Graviton central processing units (CPUs) for its AI initiatives. This major investment underscores a strategic shift in the hardware powering artificial intelligence.
While graphics processing units (GPUs) have dominated the AI landscape for training complex models, this deal highlights the growing importance of CPUs for inference tasks. These tasks involve running trained AI models, such as the AI agents Meta is developing for its social media platforms.
The agreement, which an Amazon executive confirmed will span between three and five years, provides Meta with a massive increase in compute capacity. Nafea Bshara, an Amazon vice president and a co-founder of its Annapurna Labs chip unit, stated most of the new server cores will be located in the United States.
Meta's Diversified Hardware Strategy
The turn toward AWS Graviton chips is a key part of Meta's broader strategy to secure a diverse and resilient supply of computing hardware. The company is actively avoiding dependence on a single vendor or chip architecture to fuel its substantial AI ambitions.
This year, Meta has also announced significant partnerships with other major chip companies, including Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Arm Holdings. This multi-pronged approach ensures it has access to a variety of specialized processors tailored for different AI workloads.
According to Amazon's Bshara, Meta selected the upcoming Graviton5 chip due to its superior price-performance ratio. The processor, built on a 3-nanometer process, demonstrates the competitive edge that AWS's in-house silicon design can offer to large-scale customers.

For Amazon, securing this multibillion-dollar commitment from a tech giant like Meta is a powerful validation of its custom chip development program. The Graviton series was designed to provide optimized performance and cost efficiency for workloads running on the AWS cloud.
