Iranian Businesses Face Mass Layoffs Amid Wartime Pressures Iranian businesses are experiencing widespread layoffs, impacting an estimated one million jobs, as the country grapples with economic pressures stemming from recent conflicts and international sanctions. This trend, observed in recent weeks across various sectors, is a direct consequence of disruptions to industrial sites, infrastructure, and trade routes, exacerbated by a U.S.-imposed blockade on ports following a ceasefire last month.
The economic downturn is particularly acute in the technology sector, where government-mandated internet shutdowns have severely hampered operations. An Iranian government official estimated the loss of one million jobs and the indirect unemployment of two million people. On April 25, an Iranian job search platform recorded 318,000 resume submissions in a single day, a 50% increase from its previous record, indicating a surge in unemployment.
These challenges compound pre-existing economic vulnerabilities, including years of sanctions, corruption, and currency devaluation. The private sector's struggles are expected to reduce tax revenues, further straining the government's budget, which already projected reduced public spending. The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has urged companies to avoid layoffs, even as government actions, such as internet shutdowns, contribute to the crisis.
