Jagex has responded to generative AI appearing in a trailer for RuneScape 3’s Dragon Slayer 2 quest shown during RuneFest, according to GamesIndustry.biz . The company attributed the trailer’s production to a “trusted external partner”; so far, this is one named company’s account carried by a single trade outlet.
Why it matters
The immediate issue is one trailer, but the business question is who owns an outside vendor’s creative choices. Calling the producer a trusted partner explains where the work happened, not where accountability ends. Players and artists judging Jagex’s AI position are likely to care about the finished material carrying the RuneScape name, regardless of which company made it. For developers, the practical consequence is procurement: an AI policy that covers employees but not contractors leaves a fairly obvious door open. The render may be outsourced; the reputational bill isn’t. The strongest counter-read is that this could be an isolated vendor decision rather than evidence of a broader production practice, and the available report doesn’t establish anything beyond this trailer.
What we don't know
- What generative-AI material appeared in the trailer, and how much of the finished video did it represent?
- Did Jagex approve the material before the trailer was shown during RuneFest?
- Will Jagex require external marketing partners to follow the same AI rules as its internal teams?
Watch for
Watch for a Jagex policy or production-credit announcement explaining whether its generative-AI standards apply to external partners.
