Global Academia Rocked by Cyberattack

Cyberattack Disrupts Global Academic Institutions An international cyberattack disrupted academic operations at approximately 9,000 universities and schools across the United States, Canada, and Australia this week. The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the incident, which targeted Canvas, a widely used academic sosourcesware platform owned by Instructure.

The disruption, which began earlier this week, caused outages and accessibility issues for students and faculty, impacting coursework and examinations. By late Thursday, Instructure reported that Canvas was available for most users, though some institutions continued to experience outages into Friday.

Universities such as the University of Sydney, Mississippi State University, Idaho State University, Penn State University, and the University of British Columbia reported significant impacts, with some cancelling or postponing final exams.

The cyberattack involved ransom demands, with messages from ShinyHunters appearing to solicit private negotiations to prevent data release. Cybersecurity firm Emisosources noted that targeted threats began on Sunday, with deadlines set for Thursday and May 12. Discussions regarding potential extortion payments are reportedly ongoing. The incident highlights growing concerns over cybersecurity vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure, prompting calls for enhanced defenses against such threats.
