Authorities in India have reportedly initiated mass detentions of political activists and student organizers ahead of a scheduled protest in New Delhi. The Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led movement, claims that approximately 10,000 individuals associated with various opposition groups have been detained nationwide to preempt Saturday’s demonstration.
The protests center on allegations of irregularities regarding a nationwide voter list revision. Critics contend that the removal of over 130 million names from electoral rolls disproportionately disenfranchises opposition supporters, while government officials maintain the process is a standard administrative effort to eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries.
This unrest follows recent political friction involving the resignation of a cabinet minister and ongoing disputes over electoral integrity. The government has denied allegations of misconduct, characterizing the opposition's claims as unsubstantiated and politically motivated. Security forces have implemented barricades in the capital to manage the anticipated influx of protesters.
