The Labour Party successfully retained the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in a by-election triggered by the resignation of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali secured 12,292 votes, defeating the Green Party leader, who received 8,928 votes. The result provides political stability for the current administration following recent electoral volatility.
Voter turnout was recorded at 38.7%, representing a 15.4% decline from the 2024 general election. This low participation rate highlights potential shifts in voter engagement within traditionally secure Labour strongholds.
The Labour Party
The Green Party’s performance was impacted by internal instability following a controversial conference vote regarding the definition of Zionism. The party leadership faced criticism for a perceived lack of direction on the issue, which coincided with declining national polling figures and internal dissent among senior party members.
Independent candidate George Galloway received 314 votes, a negligible impact on the final outcome. The campaign was marked by allegations of racism directed at the Labour candidate, which the party formally condemned as an attempt to delegitimize her candidacy.
