The Japanese government has formally condemned Russia’s request to Dutch authorities for the extradition of International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane and eight other court officials. Tokyo characterized the move as an unacceptable measure targeting individuals associated with the international judiciary.
This diplomatic friction stems from the ICC’s 2023 issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding alleged war crimes in Ukraine. In response, Russian authorities placed these officials on a wanted list and subsequently issued in absentia prison sentences in 2025.
Japan intends to pursue further protests and coordinate with the ICC and other international signatories to address these actions. The situation highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions between Moscow and the international legal community, posing potential risks to the safety of officials involved in high-profile war crimes investigations.
