India fund assets fall 5.1% as debt withdrawals rise

Equity schemes still drew inflows, but liquid and money-market funds drove most of September’s industry outflow.

India fund assets fall 5.1% as debt withdrawals rise

India’s mutual fund industry’s closing assets under management fell 5.1% month on month in September 2026 to Rs 82.64 lakh crore, a Monday ICRA Analytics report said.

The decline from Rs 87.09 lakh crore in August gives fund distributors and asset managers a weaker liquidity signal, even as equity-oriented schemes kept attracting money. The report said the industry moved from a Rs 41,354 crore net inflow in August to a Rs 1.33 lakh crore outflow in September.

Short-duration withdrawals dominate

ICRA Analytics said the contraction reflected two pressures: net outflows of Rs 1.33 lakh crore, largely from short-duration debt categories, and an estimated Rs 3.10 lakh crore adverse valuation and residual impact. Nearly 70% of the fall in assets came from portfolio valuation changes and reconciliation effects rather than net redemptions, the report said.

Gross mobilisation rose 8.2% month on month to Rs 15.25 lakh crore, while redemptions increased 21.2% to Rs 16.59 lakh crore. The report said the deterioration came less from weak subscriptions than from higher withdrawals from liquidity-management products.

Equity-oriented schemes recorded Rs 38,294 crore of net inflows in September, up 30.6% from August. Income and debt-oriented schemes posted Rs 1.83 lakh crore of outflows, compared with Rs 9,225 crore in August, and debt AUM fell Rs 1.70 lakh crore to Rs 17.75 lakh crore.

Liquid and money-market funds together saw withdrawals of about Rs 1.47 lakh crore, or about 80% of debt-category outflows, the report said. The next check is October 2026 industry data: if liquid-fund withdrawals persist, asset managers face a weaker fee base in debt products; if equity inflows hold, the mix shifts further toward market-linked revenue.
