Dow rises 200 points as GE lifts forecast
The blue-chip index gained while technology-heavy benchmarks slipped, leaving U.S. equities split during Tuesday trading.

The Dow rose more than 200 points, or 0.43%, on Oct. 20 as GE Aerospace raised its forecast and broader U.S. equity indexes traded mixed.
The move left blue-chip shares ahead of the Nasdaq and S&P 500, both of which fell in the same session. Oil gained while gold declined, adding a cross-asset split to a trading day led by corporate earnings updates.
Dow split from Nasdaq
GE Aerospace reported earnings that supported a higher company forecast. The update gave investors a fresh corporate signal during a session otherwise marked by uneven index performance rather than a broad advance across U.S. stocks.
The Dow’s gain of more than 200 points mattered because it contrasted with declines in the Nasdaq and S&P 500. That split pointed to narrower leadership inside equities, with industrial exposure outperforming while the wider market failed to move in one direction.
For the macro read-through, the session offered a restrained signal. Firmer oil can feed into inflation-sensitive positioning if sustained, while weaker gold can indicate less demand for defensive assets during the same window.
The next test is whether the Dow’s 0.43% gain holds through the Oct. 20 close while Nasdaq and S&P 500 weakness persists.
If the split narrows, the session looks more like routine rotation; if it widens, investors may treat earnings quality as the main dividing line inside U.S. equities.
