Mac Shortages Loom for Apple

Apple Faces Mac Supply Shortages Amid AI Demand Apple Inc. is experiencing supply constraints for its Mac mini and Mac Studio desktop computers, with Chief Executive Tim Cook indicating on an earnings call yesterday that it may take "several months" to balance supply and demand.

The shortages are partly attributed to higher-than-expected demand driven by users running artificial intelligence (AI) agents and tools locally on these platforms. This situation has led to multiple configurations being listed as "currently unavailable" or facing extended shipping delays on Apple's website.

Cook cited general constraints in the availability of advanced manufacturing nodes for Apple's System-on-Chips (SoCs) as a contributing factor, limiting flexibility in the supply chain. While these constraints primarily affect the iPhone, they also impact Mac production to a lesser extent. The company also noted that the extent of shipping delays could be influenced by anticipated replacements for both systems later this year, featuring Apple M5-series chips.

Despite these supply challenges, Apple reported a successful second quarter for 2026, with total revenue reaching $111.2 billion, a 17 percent increase year-over-year. The Mac segment specifically grew by 6 percent compared to the previous year, even with the ongoing shortages. However, Apple anticipates "significantly higher memory costs" in the third quarter, which will increasingly impact its business.
