Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Free Former First Lady Kim Keon Hee
The Supreme Court extended Kim Keon Hee’s detention by two months to prevent flight and evidence tampering during her ongoing corruption trials.

The Supreme Court has issued a new arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon Hee, extending her detention by two months. The court cited risks of flight and evidence destruction as the primary justifications for maintaining custody.
Kim is currently undergoing appellate review for two separate criminal cases involving corruption and bribery. The extension ensures she remains incarcerated while the Supreme Court deliberates on a four-year sentence for stock manipulation and a five-year sentence for influence-peddling.
Legal proceedings have been delayed following the referral of the corruption case to the court’s full bench in July. The defendant remains held at the Seoul Nambu Detention Center, where she has been detained since August 2025. Defense counsel has cited health concerns and the psychological impact of the ongoing litigation as factors in the case.
