Unregistered drone intercepted over South Korea’s World Cup base

Mexican military personnel intercepted and brought down an unregistered drone seen flying over South Korea’s training base in Guadalajara, Mexico, during a closed session on Tuesday, officials said.

The incident happened ahead of South Korea’s Group A World Cup match against co-hosts Mexico on Friday, raising fears of attempted spying during preparations.

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo said at a news conference that the incident did not have a significant impact on the squad, but described the timing as “unfortunate” given the proximity to the match.

The intervention was described as part of a broader security operation across World Cup host cities, involving coordination of thousands of personnel and the use of advanced technology.

The use of drones at elite sporting events has previously triggered disciplinary fallout. In 2024, Canada’s women’s team was accused of using a drone to spy on a New Zealand training session before their opening match at the Paris Olympics.

In that case, head coach Bev Priestman was dismissed by Canada Soccer, two staff members were suspended, and the team was deducted six points.

With both Mexico and South Korea opening their World Cup campaigns with three points, Friday’s meeting could be important in shaping the Group A standings, while the drone incident remains under review.
