World Cup 2026 round of 32 set to start June 28

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout phase will begin on June 28, with the expanded 48-team tournament introducing a round of 32 for the first time. The opening knockout round is scheduled to run through July 3, after the group stage ends on June 27.

Under the competition format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups qualify for the round of 32, alongside the eight best-ranked third-place finishers. The knockout phase then continues with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and a third-place playoff, with the final set for July 19.

As of June 21 (03:00 GMT), Mexico, the United States and Germany had already secured places in the last 32. Haiti and Türkiye had been mathematically eliminated after results left them unable to catch the third-placed teams in their respective groups.

How teams advance from the group stage

The tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams has increased the number of groups to 12 and created a larger knockout bracket. Qualification is based on group placement, with third-place teams also in contention via a ranking table used to determine the eight best third-place finishers.

FIFA’s schedule lists the round of 16 from July 4 to July 7 and the quarterfinals from July 9 to July 11. The semifinals are set for July 14 and July 15, followed by the third-place match on July 18 and the final on July 19.

New tie-breaker emphasis on head-to-head results

FIFA has adjusted its group-stage tie-breaker criteria for 2026, prioritising head-to-head records over overall goal difference as the primary separator for teams level on points. If teams remain tied after head-to-head points, goal difference and goals scored in those direct matches are used.

If teams still cannot be separated, overall goal difference and overall goals scored across all group matches are applied, followed by team conduct scores based on disciplinary records. If a tie persists, the most recent published FIFA world rankings are used as the final criterion.

The list of qualified and eliminated teams is expected to grow as the final group matches are completed before June 27, shaping the full round-of-32 bracket.
