Tar Heels Tap Malone to Lead Men's Hoops

The University of North Carolina (UNC) has named Mike Malone as its new head coach for the men’s basketball program, selecting a long-time NBA coach in a move that officials described as a break from the school’s traditional coaching lineage. Malone is 54 and arrives with a professional résumé that includes an NBA title with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.

Malone’s coaching career spans 24 years in the NBA across assistant and head coaching roles. He previously served as head coach of the Sacramento Kings from 2013-2014 and later led the Denver Nuggets from 2015-2025. Across his NBA head coaching stops, he compiled a career record of 510-394.

During his time in Denver, Malone guided the Nuggets to six playoff appearances, reached two Western Conference Finals, and won the 2022-23 NBA championship. The Nuggets’ success under his tenure also coincided with Nikola Jokić earning three NBA MVP awards while playing under Malone’s leadership.

Before taking NBA head coaching jobs, Malone built experience as an assistant coach with several franchises. He worked with the New York Knicks from 2001-2005, the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-2010, the New Orleans Hornets from 2010-2011, and the Golden State Warriors from 2011-2013. UNC’s announcement positions that breadth of experience as a central part of what he brings to a college program.

Malone also has a collegiate background, though it predates his NBA rise. He served as an assistant coach at Oakland from 1994-1995, Providence from 1995-1998, and Manhattan from 1999-2001. Those roles, combined with his long NBA tenure, form the foundation of a coaching profile that spans both the college and professional levels.

UNC said Malone’s approach is built around defensive emphasis and player development, and the program expects those priorities to shape the Tar Heels’ style going forward. The hire places a coach with recent championship credentials into one of college basketball’s most prominent jobs, linking a major NCAA brand with a coach best known for NBA results.
