Approximately a dozen parents attended a landmark social media addiction trial, where a lottery system determined access to 15 public seats.
The trial, which concluded arguments in March 2026, involves a 20-year-old plaintiff, identified as K.G.M. or Kaley, who alleges that the addictive design of Instagram and YouTube contributed to her suicidal thoughts and body image issues.
Meta and Google are defending against claims that their platforms were negligently designed to induce addiction and cause mental health problems. The companies argue that they aim to create positive user experiences and that other factors contributed to Kaley's mental health struggles, with their platforms serving as an outlet.
Snap and TikTok, initially co-defendants, settled their cases prior to the trial. This case is one of several "bellwether" trials expected to influence the handling of thousands of similar lawsuits.
