Vietnam and EFTA Nations Seal Landmark Free Trade Deal

Vietnam has finalized a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The pact mandates the reduction or elimination of customs duties on industrial, agricultural, and fishery products, alongside provisions for services and intellectual property rights.

This agreement serves as a strategic mechanism for Vietnam to diversify its export markets and mitigate risks associated with global trade volatility and United States tariff policies. By deepening integration into global value chains, Vietnam aims to transition toward higher-value-added manufacturing sectors.

For the EFTA member states, the deal functions as a hedge against protectionist pressures, fostering greater strategic autonomy through alternative commercial partnerships. The agreement concludes over a decade of intermittent negotiations, signaling a commitment to a rules-based trading framework despite ongoing geopolitical shifts. Bilateral trade between the parties reached approximately 5.4 billion USD in the previous year, with machinery and textiles serving as primary trade components.
