U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday, April 6, 2026, that Iran must agree to a ceasefire deal by Tuesday night or face the prospect of being “taken out in one night.” He delivered the warning during a White House press conference, linking the message to what he described as a rapidly intensifying confrontation between the United States and Iran.

Trump’s comments followed earlier threats of wide-ranging attacks on Iranian power plants and other critical infrastructure. The administration’s public messaging on Monday paired that ultimatum with indications that military action was already in motion, as officials described a near-term escalation window centered on Tuesday.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said significant strikes against Iran were underway on Monday and that even larger operations were expected for Tuesday. The statements, delivered alongside the President’s ceasefire deadline, underscored that the U.S. posture was not limited to warnings and that officials were presenting the situation as an active military campaign with additional steps anticipated within roughly 24 hours.

At the same press appearance, the White House provided details about the recovery of a downed American airman from Iranian territory over the weekend. Trump said the airman was shot down on Friday and recovered on Sunday morning, describing the mission as a complex effort that involved hundreds of American forces to locate and extract the service member.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed the agency took part in what he called a “deception campaign” connected to the rescue. Trump said U.S. personnel engaged enemy forces during the operation, recovered the officer, eliminated threats, and left Iranian territory without casualties.

Hegseth said the airman used an emergency transponder to signal his location, which officials presented as a key element enabling the recovery. The administration framed the operation as evidence of U.S. capability, with Trump characterizing it as demonstrating “skill and precision, lethality and force.”

With a deadline set for Tuesday evening, the combination of an ultimatum, reported ongoing strikes, and public disclosure of a cross-border recovery mission marked a sharp rise in tensions. The immediate uncertainty remains whether Iran will agree to the ceasefire deal by the stated time and how U.S. operations will proceed if that deadline passes without an agreement.
