    Mercedes-Benz has reintroduced its EQS electric sedan to the U.S. market, with the 2027 model set to reach dealerships in the second half of 2026. The company is positioning the updated EQS around longer driving range, faster charging, and new in-car technology, including a steering system that removes a traditional mechanical connection.

     

    The 2027 EQS is projected to deliver 925 kilometers (575 miles) of range on the WLTP cycle. Mercedes-Benz attributes that figure to a new battery chemistry that uses silicon oxide with graphite in the anodes, and it lists a usable capacity of 122 kWh. The update is aimed at improving real-world usability for long-distance driving, while keeping the EQS in the premium segment of the global EV market.

     

    Charging hardware has also been revised. The vehicle moves to an 800-volt architecture and supports 350 kW DC fast charging, which Mercedes-Benz says can add 320 kilometers of range in 10 minutes. For 400-volt charging stations, the system is designed to split the battery so it can charge at 400 volts at up to 175 kW, a configuration intended to maintain compatibility across different charging networks.

     

    One of the most notable changes is the introduction of steer-by-wire, described as a first for Mercedes-Benz. The system replaces the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the steering rack with electronic controls. Mercedes-Benz is also adding an AI-powered assistant within its MB.OS operating system, alongside a standard 55-inch Hyperscreen using a “Zero Layer” interface.

     

    On efficiency and energy recovery, the updated EQS keeps a 0.20 drag coefficient. Mercedes-Benz also says regenerative braking power has been increased by one-third to 385 kW. Together with the battery and charging changes, these updates frame the 2027 EQS as a technology-led refresh as automakers compete on range, charging speed, and software features in major markets.

     

    Several details remain unclear from the announcement, including how the WLTP range projection will translate to U.S. testing standards and what final specifications will be for vehicles delivered to customers. Mercedes-Benz has also not detailed how steer-by-wire will be configured across trims or how the charging performance will vary by conditions, leaving some practical outcomes to be confirmed closer to the second-half 2026 dealership arrival.
