Tata Electronics and ASML signed an agreement on Saturday to establish India's first front-end semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat, marking a significant step in India's domestic chip industry development. The Dutch chipmaking equipment manufacturer, ASML, will provide technology to support Tata Electronics' planned 300-millimeter semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
This initiative, with an investment of $11 billion from Tata Electronics, aims to produce chips for various applications including automotive, mobile devices, and artificial intelligence. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, underscoring the strategic importance of the collaboration.
India has committed billions of dollars in subsidies to attract semiconductor manufacturing, with eight projects currently underway, including a $14 billion Tata Electronics facility in Gujarat. This partnership also aligns with Dutch semiconductor firms' efforts to diversify markets amid global trade restrictions and geopolitical rivalries.
