Sui sets quantum-resistant upgrade for Q1 2027
Sui has scheduled a Q1 2027 mainnet upgrade for quantum-resistant signatures, using an opt-in alias system to avoid address changes.

The Sui blockchain network has put a mainnet upgrade on its roadmap for the first quarter of 2027 to introduce quantum-resistant signature protocols, aiming to reduce long-term security exposure as quantum computing advances.
Officials involved in the plan said the timing is designed to stay ahead of a 2030 cryptography deprecation timeline referenced in the network’s announcement, positioning the transition as a proactive step rather than a last-minute migration.
Dual signature approach across accounts and vaults
The rollout is structured around two approved signature schemes, each assigned to a different layer of activity on the network. For standard user accounts, Sui plans to use the ML-DSA-65 standard, which the project noted is currently deployed by platforms including Chrome and Cloudflare.
For smart contract vaults that hold higher-value assets, Sui plans to apply SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s, described as a hash-based signature scheme. The stated is to keep vault security aligned with post-quantum standards that are being adopted more broadly across financial networks.
Opt-in aliases designed to avoid forced address changes
Sui said the post-quantum signatures are intended to work through an opt-in address alias system. Under this approach, users would be able to update authorization keys to post-quantum standards without moving assets or changing existing wallet deposit addresses.
The network also plans to preserve current derivation paths and seed phrases, a design choice described as a way to reduce user friction and limit operational costs that can come with large-scale security upgrades. Mysten Labs co-founder and chief product officer Adeniyi Abiodun said the system is intended to provide quantum-resistant accounts and investment vaults without requiring users to change addresses.
Testnet and mainnet milestones through 2026 and early 2027 In the stated schedule, ML-DSA-65 accounts are expected to reach testnet by the end of 2026. Full authentication support for those accounts is then planned to arrive on mainnet in early 2027, consistent with the broader Q1 2027 upgrade window.
Separately, the network said quantum-safe vault functionality is scheduled to be introduced on Sui mainnet before the end of 2026, ahead of the full authentication rollout for standard accounts.
Industry timelines cited alongside a Coinbase move
Sui’s timetable was presented as aligned with proposed federal schedules that recommend deprecating traditional cryptography in current digital asset systems by 2030 and fully disallowing it by 2035. The project framed its transition as a response to those long-horizon targets.
The announcement also pointed to similar steps elsewhere in the sector. Coinbase said in July 2026 that it is adapting its key management system to a post-quantum version, with a target of partial implementation by 2027.
Some elements of the broader post-quantum shift still hinge on execution details that were not addressed in the plan’s outline, including how quickly users will opt in and how the transition will be handled across different types of wallets and custody setups.
