Street Fighter leads box office in $51.1m debut

Capcom’s Street Fighter opened with an estimated $51.1 million worldwide over its debut weekend and led the global box office, IGN News reported on Oct. 18.

Domestic cinemas accounted for an estimated $31 million; overseas markets added $20.1 million. The start trailed Mortal Kombat 2, which opened to $63 million globally earlier in 2026.

The live-action film brings Capcom’s fighting-game series back to theaters with Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Kitao Sakurai directed the adaptation.

The box-office win came with uneven reviews. IGN reported scores of 44 on IMDb and 41% among Rotten Tomatoes critics, while IGN’s own review gave the film 6/10. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience measure stood at 79%, according to IGN.

IGN said one phrase circulating around the release was “Dumb fun,” reflecting a split between softer critical response and a warmer early audience reading. That split matters for a film whose theatrical run now depends on how well it holds after the opening weekend.

The budget benchmark is also part of the sequel math. IGN cited Deadline as reporting that Paramount, Legendary and Capcom made Street Fighter for $82 million. Theatrical grosses are shared with cinemas, so the production cost is a scale marker rather than a direct break-even line.

Recent fighting-game adaptations give Street Fighter a mixed comparison set. The 2021 Mortal Kombat film opened with $22.5 million domestically during the post-lockdown release period, according to IGN. Mortal Kombat 2, released earlier this year, reached $63 million worldwide in its first weekend and placed second behind The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Other new releases showed how wide distribution shaped the weekend. Nathan Fielder’s You Can See Everything made $15 million domestically from 855 theaters, while Street Fighter played in 3,575 theaters. Whalefall opened with $17.5 million against a reported $60 million budget, according to IGN.

The immediate question for Street Fighter is whether audience interest can offset weaker reviews in later weekends. IGN reported no dated sequel decision or follow-up release milestone for the film.
