South Korean Equity Market Volatility Driven by Semiconductor Sector Decline
South Korea’s Kospi index fell 5.5 % as foreign investors offloaded semiconductor stocks amid concerns over rising competition from Chinese chip manufacturers.

The South Korean Kospi index declined 5.5% on Tuesday, closing at 6035.35 following a session that saw a temporary trading halt to mitigate volatility. This suspension, the first since July, was triggered by a sharp selloff in major semiconductor equities, specifically Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
Market pressure stems from competitive concerns regarding advancements in DRAM technology by Chinese manufacturer CXMT. The introduction of new chip structures by Chinese competitors has intensified investor skepticism regarding the long-term earnings sustainability of South Korean memory-chip producers.
Foreign institutional investors have accelerated net selling of large-cap semiconductor stocks, reflecting a broader reduction in exposure to regional risk assets. Analysts indicate that while AI infrastructure demand remains high, the market is increasingly pricing in risks associated with cyclical overinvestment and potential future inventory gluts. The concentration of the Kospi index in two primary chip manufacturers leaves the broader market highly sensitive to sector-specific technological shifts and global semiconductor price fluctuations.
