Seven Nations Launch Official Bids to Host 2036 Olympic Games

Seven nations, including South Africa, Qatar, India, Hungary, Turkey, Germany, and the Republic of Korea, have been invited to present formal bids to the International Olympic Committee for the 2036 Summer Games. This selection marks the initial phase of a multi-year evaluation process, with a final host selection scheduled for 2029.

Qatar is currently identified as the primary frontrunner, though a successful bid would necessitate rescheduling the event to avoid extreme summer temperatures. India remains a significant contender, despite ongoing concerns regarding the governance of its national Olympic association and the technical maturity of its proposal.

Other participants

Hungary’s bid, which proposes a multi-city model across Budapest, Vienna, and Bratislava, faces political uncertainty following recent changes in national leadership. Other participants, including Germany, are viewed by analysts as potential candidates for the 2040 cycle rather than 2036.

The International Olympic Committee will conduct feasibility assessments through March 2027. A targeted dialogue with preferred hosts will commence in December 2028, preceding the final vote.
